GPSR in Slovenia: What PrestaShop Sellers Must Do
GPSRIf your PrestaShop store reaches customers in Slovenia, the General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR) applies to your sales. The GPSR is Regulation (EU) 2023/988 and has applied throughout the European Union since 13 December 2024. As a Regulation, it applies directly in Slovenia, with the same rules as everywhere else in the Union and no separate transposition required. The national dimension lies in enforcement: Slovenian authorities supervise the local market and apply the rules in Slovenian. This guide explains what the GPSR asks of an online seller and how a Slovenia-facing shop can meet it.
The GPSR is the EU’s general safety framework for consumer products not covered by more specific rules, built on the principle that only safe products may be placed on the market. For the wider picture, see our complete GPSR guide.
You need an EU responsible person
Central to the GPSR is the requirement that each product has an economic operator established in the EU who is responsible for its safety. If you are established in the EU, you may already fulfil this. If your business sits outside the EU, a product cannot be placed on the market unless there is an EU-based responsible person — a manufacturer, importer, authorised representative or fulfilment service provider — whose details are available.
For a Slovenia-facing shop, the practical check is that every listing is backed by a responsible person somewhere in the EU. That operator may be established in any Member State, not only Slovenia.
Information you must show on listings
Article 19 of the GPSR describes the information a customer must see on an online listing before buying. On your PrestaShop product pages, this should include:
- the manufacturer’s name, registered trade name or trade mark, with a postal and electronic contact address;
- where the manufacturer is outside the EU, the name and contact details of the EU responsible person;
- information identifying the product, such as a type, batch or serial number or an image;
- any warnings or safety information the product requires, in Slovenian for Slovenian customers.
Language matters
Warnings, safety information and instructions must reach the consumer in a language they can easily understand. For customers in Slovenia, that means Slovenian. Even where a listing is otherwise in another language, the safety-critical content should be available in Slovenian so a buyer can use the product safely.
Enforcement in Slovenia
Market surveillance is organised at national level. In Slovenia, consumer product safety is overseen by the Market Inspectorate (Tržni inšpektorat RS), which can inspect products, request information and order corrective measures where a product is unsafe. Dangerous products identified anywhere in the EU may be reported through the EU-wide Safety Gate rapid alert system, which national authorities feed into and act upon. Our Slovenia country hub has more on selling into this market.
What Slovenia-facing sellers can do now
- Confirm every product has an EU-established responsible person and record the details.
- Update your PrestaShop listings to show the Article 19 information before purchase.
- Provide warnings and safety instructions in Slovenian for Slovenian customers.
- Keep traceability and technical documentation ready for the Market Inspectorate.
Product safety is best handled as an ongoing discipline, since suppliers and product ranges change over time.
