GPSR in Ireland: What PrestaShop Sellers Must Do

Selling consumer products into Ireland through your PrestaShop store brings you within the scope of the General Product Safety Regulation (EU) 2023/988 (GPSR), which has applied across the EU since 13 December 2024. The obligations are EU-wide, but Ireland has its own enforcement authority and, as an English-speaking market, its own straightforward language position. This guide covers the Irish specifics.

One EU regulation, Irish enforcement

Who enforces product safety in Ireland

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) is Ireland’s main body for consumer product safety and market surveillance. It can investigate unsafe products, issue safety warnings, request information from sellers and take enforcement action where products present a risk. Online sellers into Ireland should be prepared to engage with the CCPC.

Language: English

The GPSR requires safety information to be understandable to consumers. In Ireland that is English, which is often an advantage for UK and other English-language sellers. You still need to ensure that warnings, safety notices and instructions relevant to safe use are clearly presented in English on the product, packaging and, where relevant, the listing.

The EU responsible person requirement

A product may only be placed on the EU market if there is an economic operator established in the EU responsible for it. This is a key point for UK-based sellers after Brexit: Great Britain is outside the EU, so shipping into Ireland means each product needs an EU-established manufacturer, importer, authorised representative or fulfilment service provider acting as the responsible person.

Check each product line and make sure such an operator is identified, with contact details you can display on your listings.

Article 19: online-listing information

Article 19 of the GPSR sets out the information that must accompany a product offered online. Your Irish PrestaShop listings should clearly present:

• The manufacturer’s name (or trade name/mark) with postal and electronic contact details.
• The EU responsible person’s details where the manufacturer is outside the EU.
• Product-identification information such as type, batch or serial number, or a picture.
• Any warnings and safety information relevant to safe use, in English.

Safety Gate and recalls

The EU Safety Gate rapid-alert system flags dangerous non-food products. If one of your products becomes subject to an alert or recall, you should stop selling it, notify affected customers and cooperate with the CCPC. A prepared internal process makes this far less disruptive.

A checklist for Irish sales

• Identify an EU responsible person for every product.
• Display manufacturer and responsible-person contacts on listings.
• Present safety warnings and instructions clearly in English.
• Keep documentation ready in case the CCPC asks.
• Have a Safety Gate and recall response process in place.
