GPSR in Greece: What PrestaShop Sellers Must Do
GPSRIf you run a PrestaShop store and sell to consumers in Greece, the EU General Product Safety Regulation — Regulation (EU) 2023/988, or GPSR — applies to you. The GPSR has applied across the European Union since 13 December 2024. As an EU Regulation it takes effect directly in Greece without national transposition, so the substantive rules are the same as in every other Member State. This guide explains those rules and how they land in the Greek market.
What the GPSR Requires
At its heart the GPSR imposes a general safety obligation: consumer products placed on the EU market must be safe. It modernises product-safety law for the age of online marketplaces and imports, and it applies uniformly, so preparing your store for Greece largely prepares it for the whole Union.
One key requirement is that products have a responsible economic operator established in the EU. For goods manufactured outside the Union, an EU-based responsible person — such as a manufacturer, importer, authorised representative or fulfilment service provider — must be identified so the product can lawfully be placed on the market.
Online Listing Information (Article 19)
Article 19 is the provision that most affects online sellers. Your product listings must display specific safety information before a consumer buys, which means your PrestaShop product pages need to surface it reliably.
- The manufacturer’s name, registered trade name or trade mark, with a postal and electronic contact address.
- The EU responsible person’s details where the manufacturer is established outside the Union.
- Product-identifying information, such as an image, the type and any batch or serial number.
- Any warnings and safety information that must accompany the product.
Enforcement in Greece
The GPSR is enforced by national market-surveillance authorities. In Greece, consumer affairs and product safety fall under the General Secretariat for Consumer Affairs within the Ministry of Development, which is the body associated with consumer protection and market surveillance for goods sold into the Greek market. As with any authority, the exact procedures and enforcement priorities are for it to determine, so the description here is qualitative.
Products found to be unsafe can be shared between authorities across the EU through the Safety Gate rapid alert system, so a concern raised elsewhere in the Union may quickly reach Greek regulators.
Language: Greek
The GPSR expects safety information, warnings and instructions to be understandable to the consumer. For the Greek market that points to Greek. If your PrestaShop store operates mainly in another language, plan to provide Greek-language warnings, instructions and safety notices for products sold to Greek buyers.
Practical Steps for PrestaShop Sellers
- Verify that every product has an identified EU responsible person, particularly for non-EU manufactured goods.
- Adjust your PrestaShop templates so Article 19 information shows on each listing.
- Supply safety warnings and instructions in Greek for products destined for Greece.
- Maintain traceability records so you can respond promptly to any safety issue.
- Have a plan for engaging with Greek authorities and for reacting to Safety Gate alerts.
