GPSR in Denmark: What PrestaShop Sellers Must Do
GPSRIf your PrestaShop store sells consumer goods into Denmark, the General Product Safety Regulation (EU) 2023/988 (GPSR) applies. It has been in force across the EU since 13 December 2024, and Denmark enforces it through its own authorities with its own language expectations. This guide sets out what a Danish-facing online seller should have in place.
EU rules, Danish enforcement
The GPSR is a single, directly applicable regulation, so the obligations themselves are the same across the EU. What varies in Denmark is which body enforces the rules, the language consumers expect, and how surveillance is organised. For the full set of rules, see our GPSR law page and complete GPSR guide.
Who enforces product safety in Denmark
Product safety and market surveillance in Denmark are led by Sikkerhedsstyrelsen (the Danish Safety Technology Authority), which handles the safety of products placed on the market. Consumer-protection and marketing matters more broadly fall to the Forbrugerombudsmanden (the Consumer Ombudsman). As a seller, expect Sikkerhedsstyrelsen to be your main point of contact for product-safety questions.
Language: expect Danish
The GPSR requires safety information to be understandable to the consumer, which in Denmark points to Danish. Warnings, safety notices and instructions that matter for safe use should be provided in Danish for Danish customers, on the product or packaging and, where safety-relevant, in the listing.
The EU responsible person
A product can only be placed on the EU market if there is an economic operator established in the EU responsible for it. For non-EU sellers, including UK-based stores, this means each product line needs an EU-established manufacturer, importer, authorised representative or fulfilment service provider willing to act as the responsible person and handle safety correspondence.
Review your catalogue and confirm that every product shipping to Denmark has such an operator identified, with contact details you can display.
Article 19: online-listing information
Article 19 of the GPSR governs what must appear when a product is offered online. Your Danish PrestaShop listings should clearly show:
- The manufacturer’s name (or trade name/mark) with postal and electronic contact details.
- The EU responsible person’s details where the manufacturer is outside the EU.
- Product-identification information such as type, batch or serial number, or a picture.
- Any warnings and safety information, in Danish where safe use depends on it.
Safety Gate and recalls
Dangerous non-food products can be flagged via the EU Safety Gate rapid-alert system. If one of your products is subject to an alert or recall, you are expected to stop sales, notify affected customers and cooperate with Sikkerhedsstyrelsen. Preparing a simple response process in advance will make this much easier to manage.
A checklist for Danish sales
- Confirm an EU responsible person for every product.
- Display manufacturer and responsible-person contacts on listings.
- Provide safety warnings and instructions in Danish.
- Keep documentation ready for Sikkerhedsstyrelsen.
- Set up a Safety Gate and recall response process.
National specifics can change, so treat the details above as a qualitative starting point and confirm the current position with Sikkerhedsstyrelsen or the Consumer Ombudsman before relying on it.
