GPSR in the Czech Republic: What PrestaShop Sellers Must Do
GPSRIf you run a PrestaShop store and ship to consumers in the Czech Republic, the EU General Product Safety Regulation — Regulation (EU) 2023/988, or GPSR — applies to you. The GPSR has applied across the European Union since 13 December 2024, and as a Regulation it takes effect directly in the Czech Republic without national transposition. The substantive rules are identical to those in every other Member State. This guide explains them and how they apply in the Czech market.
What the GPSR Requires
The GPSR imposes a general safety obligation: consumer products placed on the EU market must be safe. It brings product-safety law up to date for online selling and imports, and it applies uniformly across the Union, so preparing your store for the Czech Republic largely prepares it everywhere.
A key requirement is a responsible economic operator established in the EU. For products manufactured outside the Union, an EU-based responsible person — such as a manufacturer, importer, authorised representative or fulfilment service provider — must be identified before the product is placed on the market.
Online Listing Information (Article 19)
Article 19 is the part PrestaShop sellers deal with most directly. Product listings must show specific safety information before purchase, so your product pages need to display it consistently.
- The manufacturer’s name, registered trade name or trade mark, with a postal and electronic contact address.
- The EU responsible person’s details where the manufacturer is outside the Union.
- Information identifying the product, such as an image, the type and any batch or serial number.
- Any warnings and safety information that must accompany the product.
Enforcement in the Czech Republic: ČOI
The GPSR is enforced by national market-surveillance authorities. In the Czech Republic, the Czech Trade Inspection Authority — the ČOI (Česká obchodní inspekce) — is the body associated with market surveillance and product safety for many consumer goods. It is the authority most likely to be relevant to GPSR matters for products sold into the Czech market. As always, the exact procedures and priorities are for the authority to set, so this is a qualitative description.
Unsafe products can be circulated between EU authorities through the Safety Gate rapid alert system, so an issue found elsewhere in the Union may quickly become relevant to the ČOI.
Language: Czech
The GPSR expects safety information, warnings and instructions to be understandable to the consumer. For the Czech market that points to Czech. If your PrestaShop store runs mainly in another language, plan for Czech-language warnings, instructions and safety notices on products sold to Czech buyers.
Practical Steps for PrestaShop Sellers
- Confirm each product has an identified EU responsible person, especially for non-EU manufactured goods.
- Adjust your PrestaShop templates so Article 19 information appears on every listing.
- Provide safety warnings and instructions in Czech for products destined for the Czech Republic.
- Keep traceability records so you can respond quickly to any safety concern.
- Prepare a process for engaging with the ČOI and reacting to Safety Gate alerts.
