Who Enforces Product Safety in Portugal?

Product safety in Portugal is enforced under the EU General Product Safety Regulation (EU) 2023/988 (GPSR), which has applied across the European Union since 13 December 2024. While the regulation is EU-wide, enforcement happens at national level, and in Portugal that responsibility sits with specific authorities.

The main authorities

The principal market-surveillance body is ASAE (Autoridade de Segurança Alimentar e Económica), which carries out inspections and can act against unsafe products. Alongside it, the DGC (Direção-Geral do Consumidor) leads on consumer-protection policy. Together they cover investigation of dangerous goods, information requests to sellers, and corrective or removal measures where products are found to be unsafe.

What this means for PrestaShop sellers

If you sell into Portugal, you should be ready to respond to these authorities. In practice that means:

• Keeping technical and safety documentation available on request.
• Showing manufacturer and EU responsible-person contact details on your listings.
• Providing safety warnings and instructions in Portuguese where safe use depends on them.
• Cooperating quickly if a product is flagged, including through the EU Safety Gate system.

National arrangements can change over time, so treat the authority names above as a qualitative guide and confirm the current position directly with the relevant Portuguese body when it matters.
