Who Enforces Product Safety in Hungary?

In Hungary, product safety is overseen through consumer-protection (fogyasztóvédelem) functions carried out within the government-office structure. Under the EU General Product Safety Regulation (EU) 2023/988 — the GPSR — enforcement is handled by national market-surveillance authorities, and in Hungary these consumer-protection bodies are the ones associated with product-safety oversight for goods sold into the Hungarian market.

How Enforcement Is Organised

The GPSR has applied across the EU since 13 December 2024 and takes direct effect in Hungary. Rules are set at EU level, but enforcement is national. Hungary carries out consumer-protection functions through its government offices, which makes them the relevant reference point for GPSR-related product-safety oversight in the Hungarian market.

What This Means for PrestaShop Sellers

If you sell to Hungarian consumers, assume Hungarian product-safety oversight applies to your listings. In practice that means ensuring your products are safe, that an EU responsible person is identified for non-EU goods, that your listings carry the Article 19 information, and that safety warnings and instructions are available in Hungarian.

Unsafe products can be shared between EU authorities through the Safety Gate rapid alert system, so a concern elsewhere in the Union can reach Hungary. The exact procedures and enforcement actions are for the authorities to determine, so treat this as a qualitative overview.
