Who Enforces Product Safety in Croatia?

In Croatia, product safety is enforced by the State Inspectorate (Državni inspektorat). It is the national market surveillance authority responsible for checking that consumer products meet the requirements of the General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR), Regulation (EU) 2023/988, which has applied across the EU since 13 December 2024.

What the State Inspectorate does

As Croatia’s market surveillance authority, the State Inspectorate can inspect products on the Croatian market, request documentation from sellers and economic operators, and order corrective measures where a product is found to be unsafe. Those measures can range from requiring changes to a listing to withdrawal or recall of a dangerous product.

The EU-wide Safety Gate

Enforcement does not stop at the border. When a dangerous product is identified in any Member State, it can be reported through the Safety Gate, the EU’s rapid alert system for unsafe consumer products. National authorities, including Croatia’s, feed alerts into Safety Gate and act on alerts raised elsewhere, so a problem found in one country can prompt action in others.
