Which Products Need a Digital Product Passport First?

The Digital Product Passport does not apply to everything on day one. It arrives category by category, so the useful question is not “when does the DPP start” but “when does it start for my products”. Here is the order in which the first groups are expected.

How the Rollout Works

The Regulation itself does not switch every product on at once. Instead, it empowers delegated acts that introduce the passport for one product group at a time. Because each group has its own act and its own timetable, all dates should be treated as indicative until the relevant act is finalised.

Batteries Go First

Batteries are the first product group to require a passport, with a battery passport indicatively applying from 18 February 2027. This makes batteries the natural test case for the whole system, so if you sell products containing batteries, this is the timeline to watch most closely.

The Early Priority Groups

  • Batteries, first, with a passport indicatively from 18 February 2027.
  • Textiles and apparel, named as an early priority group, expected from roughly 2027 onwards.
  • Iron and steel, also an early priority group on a similar indicative horizon.

Other groups will follow as further delegated acts are adopted, so the list above is the leading edge rather than the whole programme.
