Which Battery Register Applies in Portugal?

In short: Portugal operates a national producer register for batteries, and that is the register you deal with when placing batteries on the Portuguese market. It is the national mechanism through which producers meet their extended producer responsibility duties under the EU Batteries Regulation (EU) 2023/1542.

Why a national register applies

The regulation applies directly across the EU, but it leaves producer registration and take-back to be organised country by country. In Portugal that means registering as a producer in the national producer register and supporting collection of used batteries. It is where you place the batteries that decides which national register applies, not simply where your business sits.

What sellers should do

• Check whether you count as the producer placing batteries on the Portuguese market.
• Register in Portugal’s national producer register and meet take-back and reporting duties.
• If selling from abroad with no Portuguese producer, appoint an authorised representative in Portugal.
• Provide consumer information about disposal and take-back in Portuguese.

Registration and take-back are the national layer; labelling and the battery passport from 18 February 2027 are set at EU level. National specifics can change, so treat this as a qualitative guide and confirm the current position with the relevant Portuguese authority before relying on it.
