When Does Right to Repair Take Effect in Germany?
Right to RepairThe Right to Repair Directive (EU) 2024/1799 entered into force at EU level on 30 July 2024. But a directive does not bind your store directly on that date — each Member State must first transpose it into national law. Germany’s deadline to do so is 31 July 2026.
Why the two dates matter
The entry-into-force date sets the clock running and fixes the framework. The transposition deadline is the date by which Germany must have national rules in place giving effect to the Directive. What actually binds a German-facing seller is that national text, not the Directive in the abstract.
Where things stand
- In force at EU level: 30 July 2024.
- German transposition due by: 31 July 2026.
- National transposition in Germany is currently still pending.
