When Did the Accessibility Act Start in Hungary?
Accessibility (EAA)The European Accessibility Act (EAA) has applied since 28 June 2025. The Act is Directive (EU) 2019/882, and because it is a Directive it takes effect in Hungary through the Hungarian transposition rather than directly. Hungary copied the Act into national law, in Hungarian, and Hungarian authorities enforce it — but the application date is the same 28 June 2025 across the Union.
What the date means for shops
From that date, consumer-facing e-commerce selling into Hungary is expected to be accessible. In practice, that means meeting the standard the Act relies on — EN 301 549, which for the web points to WCAG 2.1 AA.
- Contrast of at least 4.5:1 for normal text.
- Full keyboard navigation.
- Labelled checkout forms.
- Alt text on product images.
The microenterprise exemption
One exception matters. A microenterprise providing services — fewer than ten staff and an annual turnover or balance sheet total of no more than €2 million — is exempt from the service obligations. If your shop is above either threshold, the exemption does not apply.
So while the Act has applied since 28 June 2025, whether it binds your particular shop depends on your size, and the version you follow is the Hungarian transposition.
