What Is the BDO Register for Packaging in Poland?

The BDO is Poland’s national register and electronic database for waste and packaging. It is the central record Polish authorities use to track businesses that produce waste or place packaging on the market. If you introduce packaging or packaged products to the Polish market, you are generally required to register in the BDO and meet its record-keeping and reporting duties.

What the BDO does

The register underpins Poland’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) system for packaging. Businesses registered in the BDO keep records of the packaging they introduce and submit periodic reports on quantities and types. Those reports feed into the recovery and recycling obligations that sit on packaging producers. In effect, the BDO is where your packaging activity is declared and monitored.

What it means for online sellers

If you ship into Poland, you are frequently the party introducing that packaging to the Polish market, which can bring a BDO registration and reporting duty with it. Being based abroad does not automatically remove the obligation.

• Register in the BDO if you place packaging or packaged goods on the Polish market.
• Keep records of the packaging you introduce, by type and quantity.
• Submit the required reports and meet recovery and recycling obligations.
