What Is Sociedade Ponto Verde in Portugal?
PPWRSociedade Ponto Verde is the best-known licensed packaging management system in Portugal — the organisation through which producers meet their packaging extended producer responsibility (EPR) duties. It runs the familiar “green dot” arrangement, taking on packaging-waste responsibilities on behalf of its members. The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (EU) 2025/40 (PPWR) provides the EU-wide framework, but this system is the national route to compliance in Portugal.
What it does
Producers who place packaging on the Portuguese market transfer their packaging-waste obligations to a licensed system such as Sociedade Ponto Verde. In practice this means:
- Declaring the packaging you place on the Portuguese market.
- Paying contributions that fund selective collection and recycling.
- Discharging your Portuguese EPR obligations through that membership.
What it means for sellers
If you ship packaged goods to Portuguese customers, having your packaging covered by a licensed system is generally the national step you need. The system operates in Portuguese, so plan for the registration and declarations to be in the language. And because it is national, Portuguese cover does not extend to other markets — each requires its own arrangement, even though the PPWR rules are the same EU-wide.
