How Is Battery Producer Responsibility Handled in Sweden?

In short: Sweden runs a national producer responsibility system for batteries, supervised by Naturvårdsverket, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency. It is the national mechanism through which producers meet their extended producer responsibility duties under the EU Batteries Regulation (EU) 2023/1542.

The Swedish approach

The regulation applies directly across the EU but leaves producer registration and collection to national arrangements. In Sweden, producers register and take responsibility for the batteries they place on the market, including ensuring used batteries are collected and recycled. Naturvårdsverket oversees the system. It is where you place the batteries that triggers Swedish producer responsibility, not simply where your business is based.

What sellers should do

• Check whether you count as the producer placing batteries on the Swedish market.
• Register under the Swedish producer responsibility system and meet collection and reporting duties.
• If selling from abroad with no Swedish producer, appoint an authorised representative in Sweden.
• Provide consumer information about disposal and take-back in Swedish.
