Do I Register Batteries to Sell in Austria?

In short: usually yes. If you are the party first placing batteries on the Austrian market — as loose batteries, power banks, or products containing batteries — you generally have to register as a producer in Austria’s national battery register. This flows from the extended producer responsibility duties in the EU Batteries Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, which are organised nationally.

Why registration applies

The regulation makes producers responsible for the batteries they put on the market, including arranging for used ones to be collected and recycled. Austria runs a national battery register and collection system to make this work. Placing batteries on the Austrian market is what triggers the duty to register, not simply where your business is based.

What sellers should do

• Check whether you count as the producer placing batteries on the Austrian market.
• Register in Austria’s national battery register and meet the collection and reporting duties.
• If selling from abroad with no Austrian producer, appoint an authorised representative in Austria.
• Provide consumer information about disposal and take-back in German.

Registration and collection are the national layer; labelling and the battery passport from 18 February 2027 are set at EU level. National specifics can change, so treat this as a qualitative guide and confirm the current position with the relevant Austrian authority before relying on it.
